Coin Cell Model Numbers Explained: A Lab Guide to CR, LIR, LR, SR, ML, and VL Codes

A coin-cell code can tell you two useful things quickly: the electrochemical family and the nominal outside size. It cannot tell you whether a cell is rechargeable, whether two look-alike batteries are electrically interchangeable, or whether an empty research case will fit your electrode stack.

That distinction matters in a battery lab. A packaged CR2032 sold for a key fob and an empty CR2032-format case used to test a new cathode share an outside form factor, but they are not the same product. One is a finished primary battery; the other is assembly hardware whose internal fit depends on the cap, gasket, spacer, spring, electrodes, and separator.

Coin-cell model codes are a starting point. Lab buyers still need to verify the complete case configuration and internal stack.

The short answer: how to read CR2032

In the common IEC-style designation, C identifies a manganese-dioxide lithium system and R identifies a round cell. The number 2032 indicates the nominal size family: about 20 mm in diameter and 3.2 mm in height.

Manufacturer drawings remain the final authority. Panasonic lists its CR2032 at 20.0 mm diameter and 3.2 mm height, while its CR2450 is listed at 24.5 mm by 5.0 mm. In other words, the digits are a compact designation, not a substitute for a tolerance drawing. The Panasonic CR2032 specification and Energizer CR2032 datasheet are good examples of the detail a real product drawing adds.

Do not use size alone to choose a replacement. CR2032 and LIR2032 can share a nominal envelope but use different electrochemistry, nominal voltage, and charging rules. In a research purchase, do not use the case code alone to choose spacer thickness, spring style, or disc diameter either.

What the letters mean

Code family Typical system Rechargeable? Nominal voltage class What a lab buyer should notice
CR Lithium manganese dioxide No 3.0 V A finished primary battery code; the same size label is also used informally for empty lab case formats.
BR Lithium poly-carbonmonofluoride No 3.0 V Different discharge and temperature behavior from CR; check the device or test specification.
LR Alkaline manganese No 1.5 V Do not describe LR as a mercury battery. Legacy AG names are retail shorthand and should be checked against a current datasheet.
SR Silver oxide No 1.55 V An LR and SR cell can share a size family without having the same discharge behavior.
PR Zinc-air No 1.4 V Often sold with other market labels; activation and air access are part of the system.
LIR Lithium-ion Yes Often 3.6-3.7 V A commercial designation rather than permission to charge any same-size CR cell. Follow the exact cell datasheet.
ML / VL Rechargeable manganese-lithium / vanadium-lithium systems Yes Model dependent Commonly used for backup applications; charging conditions are chemistry-specific.

The broad system letters are standardized for primary batteries under IEC 60086-1, but market names and suffixes are not always applied consistently across brands. Murata, for example, separates its current micro-battery portfolio into CR lithium, SR silver oxide, and LR alkaline families. Use a manufacturer datasheet when a cross-reference affects voltage, charging, drain rate, or safety.

A practical size chart for common coin-cell codes

This table is useful for orientation, but it deliberately avoids claiming that every product with the same digits is interchangeable.

Example code Nominal diameter Nominal height Important distinction
CR2016 20.0 mm 1.6 mm Thinnest common CR20 format in this group.
CR2025 20.0 mm 2.5 mm Same nominal diameter as CR2032, but 0.7 mm thinner.
CR2032 20.0 mm 3.2 mm Widely used as a lab case format, but 3.2 mm is the outside height, not usable stack height.
CR2430 About 24.5 mm 3.0 mm The code is nominal; verify the exact supplier drawing and tooling.
CR2450 About 24.5 mm 5.0 mm A larger internal envelope does not automatically make it compatible with CR20 tooling.
LIR2032 About 20.0 mm About 3.2 mm A rechargeable chemistry; not a direct electrical substitute for CR2032.

Why the model number is not enough for a research cell

An empty lab case does not arrive with a completed electrochemical stack. The same CR2032-format case can be paired with different spacer thicknesses and spring designs. Those choices change compression and the remaining stack-height window even when the outside label stays the same.

Illustrative component stack, not a fixed recipe. Electrode order, component thickness, and material selection depend on the cell design and lab procedure.

Before ordering, record these specifications separately:

  1. Outside format: CR2032, CR2025, CR2016, CR2430, or another case family.
  2. Case material and construction: for example, SS304 or SS316L, standard or application-specific geometry.
  3. Spacer dimensions: both diameter and thickness.
  4. Spring style and dimensions: wave spring, washer spring, or another specified design.
  5. Electrode and separator diameters: the separator must be checked against both electrodes and the usable seating area.
  6. Total stack thickness: include electrodes, separator, current collectors where applicable, and expected compression.
  7. Tool compatibility: confirm crimper, die, punch, and disassembly tooling for the selected format.

Our CR2032 electrode and separator disc size guide goes deeper into disc overhang and area calculations. For format-level differences, use the separate CR2032 vs CR2025 vs CR2016 case selection guide. Keeping those questions separate prevents the outside code from being mistaken for an internal build specification.

How to turn a model code into a purchasing list

For a CR20-series research build, a useful request is not simply “I need CR2032 parts.” A better request reads more like this:

CR2032-format case, specified stainless grade, 15.5 mm spacer at the required thickness, named spring type, electrode diameters, separator diameter and grade, plus the expected quantity.

Flux Battery Hub currently lists the main pieces separately so the build can be checked before a larger order:

Check the selected variant, not only the product title. A product page can contain several spacer thicknesses, spring styles, pack quantities, or die sizes. The exact variant is part of the technical specification.

Three cross-reference mistakes worth avoiding

1. Treating AG, LR, and SR names as universally equivalent

Legacy AG numbers can point buyers toward a size family, but they do not reliably communicate chemistry or discharge behavior. If a device or method specifies SR, replacing it with a same-size LR cell is a chemistry change, not just a brand substitution.

2. Assuming same dimensions mean same voltage

CR2032 and LIR2032 are the clearest example. Their nominal dimensions can match while their voltage and charging behavior do not. Never charge a primary CR cell.

3. Assuming a finished battery code defines an empty case interior

For research hardware, the outside format does not specify the exact internal clearance, spacer, spring, gasket opening, or usable disc diameter. Ask for a component drawing or verify a small batch before scaling the build.

Frequently asked questions

What do the numbers in CR2032 mean?

They identify the nominal size family: approximately 20 mm diameter and 3.2 mm height. Use the manufacturer drawing for exact limits and tolerances.

Are CR2025 and CR2032 interchangeable?

They share a nominal 20 mm diameter but differ in height. A thinner cell can have poor contact in a holder designed for the thicker format. For lab cases, the height difference also changes the available internal space.

Is LIR2032 the rechargeable version of CR2032?

It is commonly a rechargeable lithium-ion cell in a similar size, but it is not a drop-in electrical substitute. Confirm the device, charging method, nominal voltage, and maximum charge voltage from the exact datasheet.

Which coin-cell case should a battery lab choose?

Choose from the complete build: required stack height, electrode and separator diameters, spacer and spring configuration, case material, sealing method, and compatible tooling. The model code narrows the outside format; it does not finish the selection.

Need help checking a parts list? Send the case format, electrode and separator diameters, layer thicknesses, spacer and spring dimensions, and required quantity through the Flux Battery Hub contact page. We can help identify current product options; the final electrochemical design and validation remain with the laboratory.
